WHEN TO USE MICRONEEDLING IN SKINCARE TREATMENTS

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT), has become a popular skincare treatment in recent years. When used strategically, it can complement professional skincare plans for a variety of client concerns. Let's explore when to incorporate this method into your skincare treatments for optimal results.

A CLOSE LOOK AT THE MICRONEEDLING TECHNIQUE

Microneedling is a minimally invasive dermatological procedure using a device equipped with fine needles that create controlled micro-injuries, or microchannels, on the skin’s surface. These micro-injuries penetrate the epidermis to trigger the skin's natural wound-healing cascade, which occurs in three main phases: inflammation, proliferation and remodeling.

1. INFLAMMATION

During the inflammatory phase, the micro-injuries activate platelets and immune cells, which release growth factors. These growth factors promote tissue repair by increasing blood flow and initiating the production of new skin cells.

2. PROLIFERATION

In the proliferation phase, fibroblasts migrate to the injury site and begin producing collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for skin strength, elasticity and resilience. The microchannels also create temporary pathways that improve the absorption and efficacy of topical treatments, such as serums applied during or after the procedure.

3. REMODELING

Finally, the newly synthesized collagen (primarily type III) undergoes maturation and is replaced by type I collagen, the predominant collagen type in healthy skin.

WHEN CAN CLIENTS BENEFIT FROM THIS METHOD?

Microneedling, or CIT, can be an effective treatment for various skincare concerns since its collagen-inducing properties can improve the skin’s overall appearance. Here are the biggest advantages:

  • Improve Fine Lines and Wrinkles:  Your client's ability to produce collagen decreases with age. CIT promotes the production of new collagen and elastin, which helps improve fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Acne Scars and Texture Improvements: This method can also help smooth out acne scars by stimulating collagen production in the affected areas—especially when combined with an active cleanser, such as our Idyllic Cleanser with 3% Mandelic Acid, in home care. Additionally, it can improve overall skin texture and tone.
  • Addressing Hyperpigmentation and Sun Damage: Microneedling can help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and sun damage by promoting the production of new skin cells and breaking up excess pigment.
  • Rejuvenating Dull, Tired Skin: By improving blood flow and promoting the growth of new skin cells, CIT can give your client's complexion a more radiant and refreshed appearance.

WHEN TO AVOID MICRONEEDLING IN TREATMENTS

While these minimally invasive procedures can be a powerful tool for improving the skin's appearance, it is not suitable for all clients.

Clients who are pregnant, nursing, have open wounds or active infections in the treatment area, a history of keloid scarring, systemic infections or blood issues should avoid CIT. Also, clients who are prone to excessive scarring or hypersensitivity may experience adverse reactions.

YOUR STEP-BY-STEP CIT TREATMENT PLAN

If you've determined that this method is a suitable treatment for your client, follow these tips to ensure a safe and effective process.

TREATMENT FREQUENCY

It is generally recommended to perform treatments every 4 – 6 weeks as this allows the skin ample time for new collagen production to take place. Consistent treatments can help achieve the best results, particularly for concerns like fine lines, acne scars or uneven skin tone.

PRE-TREATMENT PREPARATION

Before the procedure, ensure your client's skin is thoroughly cleansed and free of makeup, skincare products or oils. It's a good idea to remind clients to discontinue using any Retinol, acids, tanning beds or exfoliating products at least 48 – 72 hours before their appointment as these can increase skin sensitivity.

POST-TREATMENT CARE

After the procedure, advise your client to avoid applying makeup, skincare products or anything other than a gentle, hydrating serum for at least 24 hours to allow the skin to recover. Encourage them to avoid touching their face and to switch to a clean pillowcase to minimize the risk of irritation or infection.

Sunscreen is critical! Recommend using a broad-spectrum product like our Oil-Free Protective Moisturizer with SPF 30 daily and avoiding direct sun exposure for at least 3 – 5 days. Additionally, remind them to avoid intense workouts, saunas or hot showers for 48 hours as excessive sweating can irritate the treated skin.

LONG-TERM CARE

To maintain the results of treatments, proper skincare is key. Help your clients establish an effective daily routine to ensure their skin stays nourished, protected and radiant long after their treatment.
